How social media can help a new freelancer to succeed on upwork.
When I stopped my 9-5 work in 2020, even though I had an online retail business , I was still not satisfied as I was still looking for something to do on the side as a way of making extra cash as I’m always burning data and obviously not on anything useful. If we're honest, most 9-5s in Nigeria are worthless. They steal your time, youth, and peace of mind.
Apparently, I wanted to be able to do something based on my skill set but in order to pull that off , I still needed clients who would pay for my skill sets/services.
At the time, social media was already a valuable exposure and visibility ground to getting traffic to anything , skill , business or service. As a smart lady, I thought to leaverage on that and that’s how I found out the UPWORK platform.
Now for those of you that don’t know what upwork is ?
Upwork is a global freelancing platform where businesses and independent professionals connect and collaborate remotely. Upwork is a marketplace for freelancers in fields like writing, graphic design and web development. The site helps professionals find projects, communicate with clients and get paid.
Looking back , it’s safe to say I’m glad I was able to leaverage on that insight and you can too because If you are looking to find clients for your own freelance work , design or service, social media is still one it the best tools or ways to reach potential clients at a very low costs.
So here, I will cover the cost of how social media can help new freelancers to succeed on upwork :
1. Have a futuristic approach : by futuristic approach , I mean , that although social media is a great way to increase exposure and find clients , trust me when I say , it will take time and consistency, so you have to have a long term approach to be able to remain patient and consistent whilst still focusing on achieving good results. It might take time does not mean you won’t get some clients quickly because GRACE DIFFERS. Infact, a better goal is to have a strong presence on social media that produces constant flow of leads and with time , you’ll be suprised at how you’ll get what you’re looking for. The point here is not to get discouraged and give up if you don’t see results right away. Be patient and you’ll get there.
2. Build a professional social media presence: As a freelancer on upwork , whether you’re in any area of specialty ,your online portfolio should appear across all social media channels depending on the services you offer a s a freelancer, this will better market your freelance business. It could either be through you posting often to attract clients or using hashtags on Twitter to attract professionals to network with. Whatever you do to self- promote , just make sure to maintain a professional presence.
3. Maximize the best platform that best suits yours your skill set : for example, if you’re a graphic designer , Instagram would benefit your skill set in showing clients the quality of your work as opposed to Twitter or LinkedIn. Regardless of which, just market your services effectively using hashtags on Twitter to join professional conversations like I said In the 2nd slide , answering clients questions relating to your area of specialty. Whatever you do like I said , just make sure to market your services.
4. Develop your portfolio: prospective clients may want to view your skills and jobs you’ve done in the past. Your online portfolio is your curriculum vitae that speaks for you especially when you meet prospective clients.
5. Seize opportunities on upwork : If you are looking to optimize the launch of your freelance career, the easiest and best way to market yourself is by using Upwork. When you create an Upwork profile, you can build your profile right there, providing all the key information that potential clients need to know about you. With Upwork, you can also get feedback from clients and request testimonials, even from clients you worked with outside of the platform.
But that's not all. Always upgrade your skillset.
Learn new things. The truth is once you make your first dollar, you'll always want more.
The easier way of getting more is by attracting better-paying clients. Better paying clients require people with a particular level of skill set.
If you don't already have it, discover what it is and learn it.
Goodluck on this journey.
Cheers,
Nkom Blessing.
